What Are Forex Swap Fees and How Are They Calculated Overnight?
⚡ Executive Brief & Key Takeaways
  • Primary Signal: What Are Forex Swap Fees and How Are They Calculated Overnight?
  • Overview: Swap fees are the overnight interest charges on forex positions held past the daily rollover. Learn how they are calculated, when they apply, and how to manage them....
  • Verification: Analyzed and compiled by 1UpTrade Live editorial monitoring desk.

Every forex position is really a pair of loans: you are effectively borrowing one currency to buy another. Each currency carries an interest rate set by its central bank, and the difference between those two rates determines whether you pay or earn interest for holding the position overnight. That interest adjustment is called the swap or rollover fee, and it is applied to any position still open at the daily rollover time, usually around 5 PM New York time. Scalpers who close everything before the session ends rarely notice swaps; swing traders who hold for days must factor them into every trade.

The calculation starts with the interest rate differential. If you buy a currency with a higher interest rate and sell one with a lower rate, you may receive a small positive swap, earning interest. If the arrangement is reversed, you pay a negative swap. Your broker publishes a swap rate for every pair, expressed in points per lot, and the nightly charge is roughly the lot size multiplied by that rate, converted into your account currency. The exact figure varies by broker because each one adds its own markup to the interbank rate, so always check the swap specification inside your own trading platform rather than trusting a third-party calculator. Total trading costs combine the spread, any commission, and the swap, which is why a clear grasp of forex spread and trading costs helps you judge whether an overnight hold is really worth it.

One quirk catches beginners off guard: the Wednesday triple swap. Because forex settlement skips the weekend, brokers apply three days of swap on Wednesday night to account for Saturday and Sunday. If you hold a position through Wednesday rollover, expect the charge or credit to be roughly triple the normal nightly amount. Swing traders who are unaware of this can see a chunk of profit disappear on a quiet Wednesday evening and assume something went wrong with their broker.

Swaps matter most for position traders and carry traders, and least for intraday traders. If you routinely hold positions for a week or more, the accumulated swap can meaningfully change a trade's outcome, turning a marginal winner into a loser or adding a bonus to an already profitable position. Some traders even build strategies around positive swaps, buying high-interest currencies against low-interest ones to collect the daily differential. But swaps shift whenever central banks change rates, so a carry trade that looks attractive today can turn against you after the next policy meeting.

For traders who cannot pay or receive interest for religious reasons, most brokers offer Islamic or swap-free accounts that remove overnight swap charges. These accounts sometimes replace swaps with flat administration fees after a set holding period, so read the terms carefully rather than assuming the account is entirely cost-free. Comparing swap rates between brokers is also worthwhile if you hold positions overnight regularly; the difference between brokers on the same pair can be surprisingly large.

To manage swaps practically, check the swap rates for your pairs before entering multi-day trades, avoid holding through Wednesday rollover unless the position justifies the triple charge, and remember that swaps are only one part of your total trading cost. Alongside them sit the spread and any commission, so study how forex spreads and commissions work to see the full picture of what each trade costs you. Traders who track all three costs make better decisions about which trades are worth holding and which should be closed before the rollover.
