If you have ever held a forex trade overnight and woken up to a small charge or credit you did not expect, you have met the swap fee. Swap, also called rollover, is the interest rate difference between the two currencies in a pair, applied when a position is held past the daily rollover time. It is usually small for a single night, but it adds up over weeks, and on some pairs it can quietly eat into profits or turn a break-even trade into a loss. Understanding swap before you hold a trade is part of basic risk management, not an advanced topic.

When you buy one currency and sell another, you are effectively borrowing one currency to hold the other, and each currency has its own interest rate. If the currency you bought has a higher interest rate than the one you sold, you may earn a small credit. If it has a lower rate, you pay a small charge. Your broker applies this adjustment once per day, usually around the end of the New York session. The amount depends on the pair, your position size and direction, and the broker's own markup on the underlying interest rates. That is why swap can be positive in one direction and negative in the other on the same pair, and why long and short swaps are rarely mirror images.

Many beginners are surprised by a Wednesday charge that looks three times larger than other days. This happens because forex settles on a two-business-day basis, so the weekend is accounted for on Wednesday. Holding a trade over Wednesday night therefore includes the swap for Saturday and Sunday as well. If you plan to hold a trade for several days, check whether a triple swap day falls inside your holding period, because it can change the math, especially on pairs with large interest rate differences. Some traders close positions before Wednesday rollover and reopen later, but that introduces spread costs and execution risk, so it only makes sense if the swap saving clearly outweighs those costs.

Most trading platforms show swap rates in the contract specification for each pair, listed separately for long and short positions. Check these values before opening a swing trade, and note whether they are quoted per lot per day. Multiply by your position size and expected holding days to estimate the total cost. Also remember that swap rates change as central banks move interest rates, so a pair that was cheap to hold last year may be expensive now. If you trade exotic pairs, check swap carefully, because interest rate gaps there can be much larger than on major pairs. A strategy that looks profitable on price movement alone can fail once swap is included.

For day traders who close before rollover, swap is mostly irrelevant. For swing traders, it is a real cost to factor into targets. If your target is small and your expected holding time is long, swap may consume a large share of the profit, and a shorter holding period or a different pair may be better. Carry traders deliberately seek positive swap, but that strategy carries its own risk, because price moves can overwhelm months of swap income in a single volatile day. As a general rule, never let swap alone decide a trade, but never ignore it either. Include it in your pre-trade checklist for any position you might hold overnight, and review your actual swap charges monthly to see which pairs are costing you most.
