The London open is one of the busiest windows in forex, and it is also one of the easiest places for beginners to lose money quickly. Prices often jump in the first few minutes, spreads can widen, and a move that looks like a breakout can reverse just as fast. A London open forex strategy works best when it treats those first minutes as information, not as an invitation to trade immediately. The goal is not to catch every pip of the morning move. It is to wait for a clear structure, enter with a defined risk, and leave the trade alone once the plan is set.

Before London opens, mark the high and low of the Asian session on your chart, along with the previous day's high and low. These levels give the morning a map. When London traders arrive, price often tests one of these levels first, and how it reacts there tells you more than any single indicator. A clean break with a strong candle close beyond a level is different from a quick wick that snaps back inside the range. Keep your markings simple and do not redraw them mid-trade to justify an entry that was never there. If the overnight range is very wide, the morning move may already be stretched, and waiting for a pullback becomes more important than chasing the initial push.

Many losing London open trades happen in the first five minutes. A common fix is to wait for the first 15-minute candle to close, or for price to break a level and then retest it. Confirmation does not guarantee a win, but it filters out a large share of false starts. Decide in advance what confirmation means for you: a candle close beyond the level, a retest that holds, or a second candle in the same direction. Write that rule down before the session starts. If your condition is not met, there is no trade, and that is a successful session, not a missed opportunity. Traders who force a trade because they woke up early tend to pay for that impatience all morning.

London volatility means your usual stop distance may be too tight. A stop that works in a quiet Asian session can be hit by normal morning noise, even when your direction is right. Measure the recent morning range and the average true range for the pair, then set a stop that sits beyond normal noise, not just beyond the last candle. Then reduce your position size so the wider stop still risks the same amount of money. This is the part most beginners skip. They keep the same lot size, widen the stop, and accidentally double their risk. If the wider stop makes the trade too expensive for your account, skip the trade or choose a smaller position. Protecting capital matters more than being in the market.

Once you are in, decide how you will manage the trade before price moves. A simple two-stage plan works well: take partial profit at a first target, such as one and a half times your risk, and move the remaining stop to breakeven only after price has shown real follow-through. Do not move the stop to breakeven too early, or normal pullbacks will knock you out of trades that would have worked. Also set a time limit. If a London open trade has not moved in your favour after an hour or two, the morning edge may be gone, and holding it into the quieter midday period often turns a planned trade into a hope trade. Close it, log it, and prepare for the next session.
