One of the first decisions a new forex trader faces is which currency pair to trade, and it matters more than most beginners realise. The pair you choose determines your spreads, your volatility, the quality of available analysis, and how often you will be stopped out by random noise. The right choice makes learning easier. The wrong choice makes every lesson more expensive. For almost every beginner, the right choice is a major pair.

Three qualities matter most. First, tight spreads: the difference between the buy and sell price is a cost paid on every trade, and majors like EUR/USD often trade with spreads under one pip on good accounts, while exotic pairs can charge five, ten or even twenty pips. Second, calm and readable movement: a pair that moves in smoother trends with less random spiking is easier to analyse and less likely to stop you out on noise. Third, information: majors are covered by every news service, analyst and economic calendar, so you will always know why your pair is moving.

Liquidity underpins all three qualities. The most traded pairs have the most buyers and sellers at every price, which keeps spreads tight and makes price movement more orderly. Exotic pairs involving smaller economies have fewer participants, wider spreads, and a habit of gapping sharply on minor news. They may look exciting, but they are a hard classroom for a first lesson.

EUR/USD is the usual recommendation, and for good reason. It is the most traded pair in the world, has the tightest spreads, and moves in relatively smooth trends. Its main drivers, European Central Bank and Federal Reserve policy, are covered constantly in financial news. GBP/USD is slightly more volatile and moves faster, which suits traders who want more action but can punish sloppy stops. USD/JPY is calm and liquid, though its safe-haven behaviour means it can move sharply during market panics.

USD/CHF and AUD/USD are also reasonable starting points. USD/CHF tends to be steady and is often used as a quieter alternative to EUR/USD. AUD/USD is influenced by commodity prices and Chinese economic data, which adds an extra factor to watch, but its movements are generally readable. NZD/USD and USD/CAD are fine too, though USD/CAD is heavily tied to oil prices, which beginners may not follow yet. The key point is that any major is a defensible choice. What matters is picking one, not collecting six.

Most mentors advise beginners to trade a single pair for the first few months, and the logic is strong. Every pair has a personality: its typical daily range, its favourite session, how it reacts to news, where its false breakouts cluster. Learning one pair deeply teaches you to read price behaviour, while jumping between pairs teaches you nothing deeply. A trader who has watched EUR/USD every day for three months recognises its moods in a way that a trader scanning ten pairs never will.

Sticking to one pair also simplifies risk management. You learn its average daily range, so you can place stops beyond normal noise. You learn its spread at different times of day, so you can avoid expensive hours. You learn which news events move it and which do not. That familiarity is a genuine edge, and it costs nothing but patience.

After a few months of consistent, rule-based trading on one major, adding a second pair makes sense, ideally one that is not strongly correlated with your first. If you trade EUR/USD, adding USD/JPY or AUD/USD gives you genuinely different exposure, while adding GBP/USD mostly duplicates your existing dollar view. When you do expand, apply the same discipline: learn the new pair's range, spreads and news drivers before trading it with real size.

Avoid exotic pairs until you are consistently profitable on majors. Their wide spreads and violent moves are not a shortcut to bigger profits; they are a tax on inexperience. The traders who eventually profit from exotics are the ones who mastered the majors first and moved over deliberately, with their risk rules already proven. Start where the costs are lowest, the movement is calmest, and the information is free. The majors are popular for a reason, and that reason is your advantage.
