Forex has its own language, and jumping into trading without it is like driving in a foreign country without knowing the road signs. You do not need a finance degree — but you do need these seven terms cold before you risk a single dollar. Every broker platform, tutorial, and strategy guide assumes you know them. Learn them once, and charts, order tickets, and trading discussions suddenly make sense. This guide explains each term in plain English with a simple example below.

A pip is the smallest price move a currency pair can make — usually 0.0001 for most pairs. If EUR/USD moves from 1.0850 to 1.0851, that is exactly one pip. Pips are how traders measure everything: profits, losses, and stop distances. A “50-pip stop-loss” means your trade closes automatically if the price moves 50 pips against you. Beginners should always think in pips instead of dollars, because pip-based thinking keeps your risk consistent whether your account holds five hundred dollars or fifty thousand.

The spread is the difference between the buy price and the sell price — it is the broker's cut on every trade. If EUR/USD shows 1.0850 / 1.0852, the spread is 2 pips, and you start every trade 2 pips in the red. Leverage lets you control a large position with small capital: 100:1 leverage means $1,000 controls $100,000. It magnifies profits, but it magnifies losses exactly as fast. Margin is the deposit your broker locks up to keep a leveraged trade open. Never confuse leverage with free money — it is borrowed risk.

A lot is the standardized size of a trade. One standard lot equals 100,000 units of the base currency; most beginners should start with micro lots (1,000 units) or even smaller. Position size matters more than entry timing — risking 1% of your account per trade means you can survive ten losing trades in a row. A stop-loss is an order that closes your trade automatically at a price you set in advance. A take-profit does the same for wins. Always set both before entering any trade, never after.

Knowing these seven terms will not make you profitable — but not knowing them guarantees confusion and expensive mistakes. Paper-trade on a free demo account until placing orders with correct lot sizes and stop distances feels boring and automatic. Read your broker's fee schedule carefully so spreads and overnight charges never surprise you. Forex rewards the patient and punishes the rushed; the traders who survive their first year are almost always the ones who mastered the basics before chasing advanced strategies.
