Every forex trading day has a rhythm, and for traders of European pairs, the loudest beat is the London open. When London desks start work, liquidity floods into EUR/USD, GBP/USD and EUR/GBP, overnight ranges get tested, and the day's real direction often reveals itself within two hours. Traders who understand this window can build a simple, repeatable strategy around it. Traders who ignore it often find themselves trading the noisiest, least rewarding hours instead.

London is the largest forex trading centre in the world, handling more daily volume than any other city. When its session opens, banks, funds and corporate treasuries begin executing the orders they accumulated overnight, and that flow moves prices. UK and European economic data is also released during the London morning, adding scheduled volatility to the mix. The result is a burst of directional movement that is usually cleaner and more sustained than the drift of the Asian session that precedes it.

The Asian session, by contrast, is typically quiet for European pairs. Price often settles into a narrow range overnight, with traders waiting for London. That quiet range becomes useful information: it defines the boundaries that London traders will test. When London flow breaks the Asian range decisively, it frequently signals the day's direction, because the move is backed by the deepest liquidity of the day.

A classic London session strategy uses the Asian range as its map. Mark the high and low of the Asian session on your chart. When London opens, watch for a break of one side of that range. The simplest version of the strategy enters on a confirmed break, with a stop just inside the range and a target based on the range's height or the next key level. The logic is straightforward: the break shows that London flow has a direction, and the Asian range gives you a clear line that proves you wrong if price falls back inside it.

Patience is essential. The first fifteen to thirty minutes after the open are often noisy, with false pokes above and below the range as orders are absorbed. Many traders wait for the first hourly candle to close beyond the range before entering, sacrificing a few pips for much better reliability. Others wait for a retest of the broken boundary. Both approaches beat chasing the first spike, which is how most London open losses happen.

Once in a London breakout trade, manage it actively. The morning momentum often lasts into the early afternoon, but it can also reverse when US traders arrive and reassess the move. A common technique is to move the stop to breakeven once the trade reaches a one-to-one risk-to-reward ratio, protecting capital while leaving room for the move to extend. Another is to take partial profit at the first target and let the remainder run toward a larger daily objective.

Time-based exits also work well in this window. If a London morning trade has not moved meaningfully within two hours, the momentum thesis is probably wrong, and closing for a small loss or breakeven beats holding through a dull afternoon hoping for a revival. The London session strategy is a morning strategy; trades that need the whole day to work are usually different setups entirely.

Avoid trading the first minutes of the open itself, when spreads can be wide and price erratic. Avoid forcing a trade when the Asian range is unusually wide, because a wide range means the breakout levels are far apart and the risk-to-reward is poor. Avoid trading against the daily trend on London open breakouts, since counter-trend morning moves reverse more often than they extend. And avoid holding London morning trades through major US data releases in the afternoon without a plan, because a single American report can erase a morning's gains in minutes.

The London session rewards preparation more than speed. Mark your levels the night before, know which data is due, wait for a genuine break rather than a poke, and manage the trade with rules decided in advance. Done this way, the first two hours of London can be the most productive part of a trader's day, and the rest of the session can be left alone without regret.
