Forex swap rates explained: a swap, also called a rollover fee, is the interest adjustment applied when you hold a position open past your broker's daily rollover time, usually around 5 p.m. New York time. Every currency pair combines two currencies, each with its own interest rate set by its central bank. Holding a pair overnight effectively means borrowing one currency and lending the other, and the swap is the net interest on that arrangement, plus your broker's markup.

Whether you pay or earn a swap depends on direction and the interest rate gap. If you buy a currency with a higher interest rate while selling one with a lower rate, the swap can be positive and your account is credited each night. Reverse the direction and you pay. Brokers publish separate long and short swap values for every symbol, and the two are rarely mirror images, because the broker takes a margin on financing. Checking these values before opening a swing trade is essential, since a negative swap quietly eats into profits night after night.

The size of the charge depends on the quoted swap rate, your position size, and the number of nights held. Many platforms quote swap in pips per lot or in account currency per lot, so a small per-night figure can still add up on a large position held for weeks. Worked example in general terms: a negative swap of a few dollars per lot per night, multiplied across several lots and two weeks, can reach a sum large enough to turn a modest winning trade into a breakeven one. Always factor swap into your expected reward before entering.

One detail catches many swing traders off guard: the triple swap on Wednesday. Spot forex settles two business days after the trade date, so a position rolled on Wednesday crosses the weekend, and brokers charge three nights of swap at once to cover it. A position held through Wednesday rollover therefore costs roughly three times the normal nightly amount, while no rollover is charged on Saturday or Sunday. If you plan to close a trade midweek anyway, closing before Wednesday's rollover cutoff avoids that triple charge entirely.

Swap rates are not fixed. They move when central banks change interest rates, when short-term money market rates shift, and when brokers adjust their markups. A pair that earned a small positive swap last year may charge a negative swap today after a rate cut. That is why experienced traders recheck swap values regularly rather than relying on a figure they saw months ago. Your platform's contract specification or symbol properties page lists the current long and short swap for each pair.

The most direct way to avoid swap is to close positions before the daily rollover cutoff, which is why pure day traders pay no swap at all. Swing traders have other options: choose pairs and directions with less negative swap, reduce position size on long holds, or ask whether the expected move genuinely justifies weeks of financing cost. Some brokers offer swap-free accounts, but these usually replace interest with a flat administration fee after a few days, so compare the total cost rather than assuming swap-free means free.

Swap is not a reason to avoid swing trading, but it is a cost that belongs in every trade plan alongside spread and commission. Before holding overnight, note the swap values, count the nights including any Wednesday triple charge, and subtract that total from your target profit. If the trade still makes sense, hold with confidence. Risk note: forex trading carries a risk of loss and leverage can magnify it; this guide is educational only and not financial advice.
