A funded trading account is an account provided by a proprietary trading firm that lets you trade with the firm's capital and keep 80% to 90% of the profits you generate. You do not get the money upfront. First you buy and pass an evaluation called a challenge, where you must hit a profit target — usually 8% to 10% in Phase 1 — without breaching a daily loss limit or maximum drawdown. Once you pass, you receive a funded account, typically from $5,000 to $200,000 in size, and you can request payouts on a cycle of 14 to 30 days. The capital is simulated throughout, even after funding; what changes is the reward structure, not the account type.

The Challenge: What You Pay and What You Must Do

Challenge fees vary by account size. A $10,000 challenge typically costs $50 to $100, a $50,000 challenge costs $200 to $350, and a $100,000 challenge costs $400 to $600, with fees sometimes refunded after your first payout. The rules are strict: a daily loss limit of 3% to 5%, a maximum drawdown of 5% to 10%, a minimum number of trading days, and often restrictions on holding positions through major news or over weekends. Breaking even one rule by a fraction usually ends the evaluation immediately, with no appeal and no partial credit. Before paying for any challenge, read the full rulebook and check that it fits your strategy — a scalper will struggle under a firm that bans news trading, and a swing trader will struggle under one that bans weekend holds.

How Payouts Actually Work

After you pass, you trade the funded account under a similar rule set, and you can request a payout once you meet the firm's minimum profit and trading-day requirements. Most firms offer an 80% to 90% profit split in your favour. On a $50,000 funded account, a 4% monthly return at an 80% split equals $1,600 per month. Some firms pay in 14 days, others monthly, and most require KYC verification before the first payout. Be realistic about the odds: industry data shows only about 14% of evaluations result in a funded account, and only around 45% of funded traders ever receive a payout. The model is real, but it is a performance business, not a salary.

Who Should Try It — and Who Should Not

A funded account suits a trader who already has a tested, profitable strategy on a personal account and wants larger capital without risking their own savings. It does not suit a beginner who has not yet proven an edge, because the average trader spends roughly $800 across three failed challenges before getting funded or quitting. If you cannot show 100 journaled trades with a positive expectancy, spend your challenge fees on education and demo practice instead. And beware of firms promising guaranteed funding, instant accounts with no evaluation, or profit splits above 95% — those are the marketing claims of firms that usually do not pay out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do funded accounts use real money? No. Both the challenge and the funded account run on simulated capital. Your payouts come from the firm's revenue, which is why the rules are strict and payouts are performance-based.

Can you lose money with a funded account? You can lose the challenge fee, and you can lose the funded account itself by breaking a rule. You do not owe the firm money for trading losses on a funded account.

What happens if I fail the challenge? You lose the fee and the account is closed. You can buy another challenge, but repeating the same mistakes without reviewing your journal just burns money.
