Can You Trade News on a Prop Firm Account? Rules, Risks and Safer Alternatives
⚡ Executive Brief & Key Takeaways
  • Primary Signal: Can You Trade News on a Prop Firm Account? Rules, Risks and Safer Alternatives
  • Overview: News trading rules vary widely between prop firms and breaking them can void profits or fail an account, so this guide explains the common restrictions and safer alternatives....

Major economic news can move a currency pair hundreds of pips in seconds, which is why many prop firms restrict trading around high-impact announcements. Some firms ban holding trades through news entirely, others only restrict trading a few minutes either side of the release, and some allow it with wider risk controls. Trading news on a funded account without knowing your firm's exact rule is one of the easiest ways to lose an account you did nothing else wrong on, so this is a rule worth reading twice.

Typical restrictions cover the most market-moving events: central bank rate decisions, inflation reports, and employment data such as non-farm payrolls. A common rule forbids opening or closing trades within two to five minutes of the release, and some firms apply this only to certain account types or challenge phases. A few firms go further and prohibit holding any open position through the event at all. The penalties vary too, from voiding the profits of the offending trades to failing the entire account, so the fine print matters more than the headline rule.

The danger is not just direction; it is execution. Around big releases, spreads widen dramatically, stop losses can slip far beyond their set price, and price can gap through your intended exit. On a personal account that means an unpleasant loss. On a prop account it can mean breaching the daily loss limit in a single print, even with a stop in place. Slippage is not a theory during news events; it is the normal condition, and risk models that assume clean fills fall apart exactly when you need them most.

If your firm allows news trading, reduce your size sharply, widen your awareness of spread, and accept that your stop may not fill at the expected price. A safer approach for most funded traders is to wait for the first reaction to settle, then trade the follow-through once spreads normalise and a genuine trend forms. You miss the initial spike, but you also miss the whipsaws that stop out most news traders twice before the real move begins. Patience after news is a strategy, not a missed opportunity.

Check the economic calendar every morning before you trade and mark any events that touch your pairs. If a restriction applies, close or avoid positions ahead of the window and set an alarm for when it lifts. Keep a short list of your firm's news rules next to your trading plan, and review it whenever you switch firms or account types. Funded trading is a business, and treating news rules as part of your operating procedure is what separates traders who keep accounts from traders who keep buying new challenges.

Make news awareness a fixed part of your daily routine rather than something you remember when price suddenly spikes. Each morning, open the economic calendar, note the high-impact events for your pairs, and decide in advance whether you will sit out, reduce size, or trade the follow-through. Write those decisions into your trading plan for the day, and set alerts for the events you plan to avoid. This routine takes about five minutes and removes the most common news-related mistakes, which almost always come from being surprised rather than from bad analysis. Traders who plan around news treat it as weather to prepare for, not as an excuse for a blown account, and that preparation shows up directly in their survival rate. Treat every news event as a scheduled risk to prepare for, not a surprise to react to, and your funded account will be far safer for it.
